| Fear the turtle |

Last weekend I hauled Chopper out to the Appalachian Trail for another 8.2 mile out and back around Washington Monument State Park. This squatty stone tower was the first monument completed to honor our first president.

This weekend I decided to stay closer to home because the weather has been flaky and the summer solstice is unofficially "hike naked day" on the AT. Through hikers are smelly but ok, naked through hikers... nobody wants to see that.
So I went to Gunpowder Falls and hiked a 5.4 mile loop we did years ago with Abby Holley in tow. Here's a sample of the scenery.

Saw a few people out trout fishing but not a whole lot of wildlife except this little guy crossing the trail.

Rebecca is doing well out in Montana. She saw a moose walk through her camp yesterday and is looking forward to heading to Yellowstone in the next few days. I miss her lots and can't wait for her to come home. |

Rebecca made it safely to Montana for field camp. Since she is incommunicado, I'm responsible for keeping everyone in the loop via the internets.
It was great seeing the family while we were in WI last weekend for my Grandma's memorial service. Here's a pic of me with my niece (Kayla) and nephew (Evan). They are tempestuous delights.

We met the MN crew on Monday night. It was good catching up but too short. We need to make it back more often. Here's a pic of Rebecca with one of Loomis's crazy cats.

This weekend I took Chopper out to the Appalachian Trail for an 8 mile out and back day hike. It was a good day for it and we were both pretty wiped out by the time we made it back to the car. Here's a pic from the overlook where we turned around.

It has been tough with Rebecca gone. I miss her dearly. She's been having lots of adventures and trials already and it hasn't even been a week yet. I'm sure she'll have lots to report when she gets home.

I recently threw out my last pair of Vans. It's nothing but New Balance from here to the grave. Kind of sad but not as sad as a 31 year old man who's never skated wearing skater shoes.
I started out with some 472's for hiking a while back and recently upgraded to 474's. I saw a guy riding a motorcycle wearing them and Gordon Ramsey was sporting a pair on "The F Word". Plus they are supposedly made in the USA but damn do they look lame. |

| The high price of endless possibility |

It seems like CGI action films have been shorting us on the action lately. I saw Iron Man last weekend and the action was pretty cool but there were like 3 fights total. The first desperate fight, the second fight with discovering of powers and the final fight versus the big, bad boss.
Before Iron Man, they had a preview for the re-release of 'Rambo: First Blood' which got me thinking about how much more action you can pack into a movie with just stunt men, 'splosions and copious amounts of corn syrup and red food coloring. |

Remote access is a wonderful thing. Working from home today. I've got free use of RKA's giant snow man coffee mug and no product in the hair do. Chopper is a little annoyed as I'm interrupting his nap time but he'll get over it.

Do you ever get the feeling that the rest of the country doesn't really care about the midwest? Can you tell what's wrong with this picture from the CBS morning show? If so, you're probably from the midwest.

| Quarterback Challenge Poll (QCP) |
[Jan. 23rd, 2008|08:39 pm] |
While sitting in the MSP airport, Rebecca and I were wondering how NFL quarterbacks would fair at competitions other than football. What if instead of a Super Bowl, the Vince Lombardi trophy went to the team who's quarterback won a jello wrestling match? Could the result of these competitions help to predict the actual outcome of the big game?
Submitted for your consideration, I'm going to post a series of polls pitting Eli "the mouth breather" Manning versus Tom "Bridget Moynahan's baby daddy" Brady in a series of challenges. I'll compile the results and see if they correctly predict the outcome.
This is a sensitive, scientific endeavor and requires a wide sampling. Please vote early and often. If you have trouble with the poll, just post a comment with your choice. Your vote will count!
